Fereydoon Abbasi-Davani, who also heads the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, in an interview for the Arabic-languange newspaper Al-Hayat said that Iran misled foreign officials to prevent the West from getting an accurate picture of Iran’s nuclear capability.

“We presented false information sometimes in order to protect our nuclear position and our achievements, as there is no other choice but to mislead foreign intelligence. […] Sometimes we present a weakness that we do not in fact really have, and sometimes we appear to have power without having it.”
Victoria Nuland, the U.S. Government Deputy Spokesperson said on Friday that Abbasi-Davani’s remarks prove the international community is right to be suspicious of Iran’s nuclear intentions.

“It’s telling that Iran is finally admitting in public that it lies about its nuclear program. This just further increases the international community’s concern about what the real story is in Iran. And as you know, the Board of Governors of the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] issued a very strong resolution yesterday calling on Iran to come clean with the IAEA and with the international community.”

Iran maintains its nuclear program is peaceful and that it has fully cooperated with the IAEA. But the recent statements made by Abbasi-Davani now appear to cast serious doubt on Iran’s credibly.
